2024 General Election Federal Primer
The 2024 Election for New York’s 26 congressional districts is underway, with key races that could influence the balance of power in the U.S. House of Representatives. Notably, several competitive districts on Long Island and in the Hudson Valley have drawn national attention. With seven districts marked as particularly competitive, New York could play a critical role in shaping the composition of the House in the next term.
District 1: Represented by Republican Nick LaLota, this Long Island district has been targeted by Democrats, with John Avlon running as a high-profile challenger. LaLota is a Navy veteran with a career in government while Avlon is a TV anchor who was also the speechwriter for NYC Mayor Guiliani.
District 3: Republican Michael LiPetri is challenging Democrat Tom Suozzi, who currently holds this Long Island seat. LiPetri is a former NYS Assembly Member while Suozzi is a former Nassau County Executive.
District 4: On Long Island, Democrat Laura Gillen is challenging incumbent Republican Anthony D’Esposito, a rematch of 2022, when D’Esposito defeated Gillen 51%-49%. Both Gillen and D’Esposito have a background working for the Town of Hempstead.
District 17: Republican incumbent Mike Lawler faces a tough challenge from former Democratic Representative Mondaire Jones in the Hudson Valley. Lawler is a first-term Congressman who narrowly won his race in 2022.
District 18: Democratic incumbent Pat Ryan is up against Republican Alison Esposito, with Ryan defending his seat in a Hudson Valley district known for its swing voter population. Ryan is a former Ulster County Executive while Esposito is a 25-year veteran of the NYPD.
District 19: Further north, Republican incumbent Marc Molinaro faces Democrat Josh Riley, an attorney and former U.S Senate staff member. Molinaro, a former Dutchess County Executive, lost an August 2022 Special Election for this seat before narrowly winning the seat back in November 2022.
District 22: Democratic incumbent Francis Conole is running in a closely contested seat that could swing Republican, given the Central New York district’s mixed voting base. Conole is a veteran of the Iraq War, while his challenger Brandon Williams is a former Navy veteran.
