New York State COVID-19 Update:
April 10, 2020


Today marks 40 days since New York saw its first COVID case and Governor Cuomo says he is “cautiously optimistic” now that we are seeing signs of the rate of infection beginning to slow. New York has a total of 159,937 positive cases and to date, has lost 2,844 people.

New York State COVID-19 Update:
April 10, 2020


Today the Governor announced a total of 149,316 COVID positive cases in New York, with newer models indicating a flattening of “the curve” as hospitalizations, ICU admissions, and intubations continue to decrease. Governor Cuomo attributes this improvement to social distancing measures and says continued adherence to these policies is vital to future progress. Cuomo reiterated his call to the Federal government to pass legislation to help stabilize state and local governments and repair the “immense damage” being done to the economy, poverty, housing and the healthcare system.

This morning, Governor Cuomo’s press conference began on a high note as he shared recent data suggesting that social distancing measures are having a positive impact and appear to be flattening the curve. He advised that continued adherence to these protocols is critical and could potentially bring down infection rates, hospitalization rates and needed capacity, and deaths lower than model projections.

As of April 7, New York has 138,836 positive COVID cases and 5,489 related deaths. Fortunately, new data suggests that new-hospitalization rates and intubation rates are stabilizing and trending downward, which could potentially indicate that New York is reaching a plateau. Governor Cuomo credits social distancing for this positive change and urges that further improvement is dependent upon continued adherence to social distancing protocols.

New York State COVID-19 Update:
April 06, 2020


For the first time on Sunday, Governor Cuomo announced a decrease in hospitalizations, ICU admissions and deaths related to COVID-19 with the caveat that it was too soon to determine statistical significance. Heeding the same warning today, he announced that COVID-related deaths have been “effectively flat” for the past two days. The State is working to determine whether or not we’re officially approaching the apex, and if we should expect to experience a plateau of case numbers or a decline.

April 04, 2020


New York’s first positive COVID-19 case was discovered 30 days ago, and Governor Cuomo says the apex could potentially be as close as seven days away. New York has 113,704 positive cases; 15,905 people are being hospitalized. 10,478 people have been discharged. Overall, NYC’s percentage of cases is beginning to drop; however, Long Island is becoming a growing hot spot.

The New York State Legislature concluded passage of budget bills very early (3:30 a.m.) Friday morning. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic ravaging its way through NY, the $177 billion budget included major provisions that expand Paid Sick Leave, improve bail reform and make changes to Medicaid, among other policy changes.

Nearly two days past the March 31 deadline, the Assembly continues to take up budget bills with the goal of passing the entirety of the budget tonight. Their Senate counterpart voted in favor of the budget earlier this afternoon.

April 01, 2020


Despite the deadline for the Budget being March 31, the Legislature has yet to come to a complete agreement on the final budget. Measures including bail reform, healthcare and Medicaid are likely the center of debate. Governor Cuomo stated that he and the Senate and Assembly leaders are in conceptual agreement on the budget – the Leaders are meeting with their conferences today. Senate and Assembly leaders say they expect to pass the remainder of the bills today.

March 31, 2020


As of March 31, there remain many unanswered questions with the budget deadline being less than 10 hours away. The legislature passed resolutions yesterday allowing for expedited and remote voting in light of practicing social distancing. Today it was announced that State Senator Jim Seward (Oneonta) and his wife have tested positive for the Coronavirus.
